“A George Bailey seeking his Mary” was the beginning of the personal ad I ran one October in ’91 or ’92. Some minor things one forgets like that. It is the important or shall I say ‘ Vital’ things that one never loses memory of. As with the connecting with my Soul Mate. You go decades as an adult, looking here and looking there, for a certain someone that the mystics and spiritual teachers tell you about. By your 30s you come to realize this all probably exists in romantic novels or New Age books and magazines, and is not for personal consumption. Then, she appears just like that. After many such ads and many such disappointments her letter arrives along with a mellow photograph. I say ‘ Mellow’ because the look and appearance it presented was nothing short of mellow. As if, and this seems so egotistical, that this was all for me. It had to be.
You realize, after weeks then months, then years of being alongside this woman, that what many, if not all, of those who dwell in this mystical realm always share: The other side of this dream is just LOVE! Such soul sharing relationships always begin with the physical and carnal, leading into the emotional feelings of love. Then something happens and this love surpasses all that. On many Christmas evenings, as a tradition, you sit together and watch Capra’s classic film ” It’s a Wonderful Life”. As usual, when the film reaches its great climax of the joy of community caring, you both begin sobbing and then you reach over and hug her. You tell each other how you love one another, while using up more than a few tissues.
You stay together through many rough patches and many joys. You work together 24/7, annoy each other perhaps 8/7 and need each other 16/7. When you leave the house for a brief few hours, coming home you just know she is there. Maybe you call her on your way back and she lectures you ‘ Why are you calling me now?’ You ignore her because deep inside you know she really doesn’t mean it. She wants you back home and needs you back home, because that’s the way it is, simply put. And what is really so evident is, quite honestly, the dreams you have had, and still do in some cases, don’t mean the same . The allure of fame, celebrity, wealth, status or stature seem to fade when you are with your soul mate. You both become each other’s anchor. It is the companionship, the concern for one another, that fades away all the other dreams and schemes. Isn’t that what love should be?
