Well, what we got in 2016 was the most terrible president in my baby boomer lifetime. And that took a lot, because just about all of them before him did nothing to help working stiffs. In 2020 the big money Democratic machine pushed, in my estimation, the worst politician from their party into the Oval Office. Biden was a joke! And then, he had the humongous ego to insist on running again, until his sad cognitive failures forced the ‘ moers and shakers’ to appoint Harris, instead of having an ‘Open Convention’. Trump just waltzed into office and began his combination Revenge Tour and Dismantling of our economy and democratic system of government. Oliver Hardy said it best, as if he prophesized the future, when he stated “Another fine mess you’ve gotten us into!”
Now we come to the purpose of my column. We come to the ‘Big Denial’ of those MAGA Americans who actually think that The Donald is almost the 2nd coming. His constant lies and misinformation are on par with those of the great conmen and fake medicine barkers. Yet, many of his sycophants just smile and ‘Thank the Lord’ for having him lead our nation. I was at my favorite Italian restaurant Sunday to pick up takeout. There was a rather attractive 40ish woman at the checkout counter, talking with the owner’s daughter. She wore her red ‘Trump Girl’ tee shirt. As she was about to leave, after proselytizing to the daughter, she made her final comment: “He wants to do so much to save us, but THEY are fighting to stop him.” Or the fool last week who was parked outside my acupuncture doc’s office. She had her new car plastered with Trump signs. One really caught my eye by its idiocy. ” I support a man who gave up his wealth for his country; Not a man who gives up his country for his wealth”. She also had this other sign that read ” Question Everything”. This woman is about my 70+ age, and I figure she never questions why Trump and his crew won’t release the ‘Epstein Files’, when even far right wing Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green demands it.
Here’s the bottom line folks: Factoring out some of those MAGA faithful , like the diehard evangelicals who are obsessed with abortion and transgender people, what is left (even including them) is the truth of it all, simply Racism. These are white folks who, if given sodium pentothal, would tell you they did NOT want black or brown faces living on their street or going to school with their kids, especially their young daughters. The white folks with money don’t mind having a ‘Colored Nanny or cleaning lady’ at their home, but only for a few hours. And this is not something new gang. Growing up in Brooklyn, NY, in the 50s and 60s, our neighborhoods (except the really low income ones, where there was little segregation) were either white or black/ brown. The only dark faces we saw as kids were the black man who did all the heavy lifting for his boss on the seltzer delivery truck, or the black cleaning ladies who got off the subway or bus and walked down our street to work. Some things never change.
